Melanie Safka

Melanie Safka, known professionally by only her first name, is an American folk and pop singer-songwriter. Her career was kick started by performances in Greenwich Village and, in 1969, a performance at the Woodstock Festival. Her breakthrough hit, “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” occurred shortly after, peaking at #6 on the US Billboard, and her most famous #1 hit “Brand New Key” was released in 1971. Melanie still performs and records today, taking to the stage at the Glastonbury festival in 2011.
